What is a Total Solar Eclipse?

SOLAR ECLIPSE 101

Be Prepared! Download our Newberry EclipseFest ToolKit!

Solar eclipses occur when during the “new” moon phase the moon moves directly between the Earth and Sun, causing the mood to cast it's shadow. The shadow is less than 100 miles wide and you must be in the shadow to see “Totality.”

During totality, the moon blocks the sun, turning day to night in an instant. During totality (and only during totality) it is safe to remove your solar eclipse glasses or viewing device to see the sun’s disk become black and surrounded by the flashing of the corona.

Newberry is one of the lucky few places to view this spectacular event! We are also one of the lucky few places where you can view the eclipse for the longest amount of time. Remember- if you're not in totality you will not see it and this will be your only chance to see this event here for another 61 years!
